Tamil Nadu in the grip of Jihad – VII

Would those who commit murder for wearing religious marks spare those who raise their voices for the cause of temples? Posing this question, the documentary presents the gruesome murder of four brothers who attempted to protect the temple in their home town.

Tenkasi, the second largest town in Tirunelveli district, is a ‘Municipality’, located close to Courtallam. The town got its name Tenkasi, meaning ‘Kashi of the South’, as it has a Kasi Viswanath Temple. The town was founded by Dyan kings and the temple was built by Parakrama Pandya. Hindus comprise 62% of the population; Muslims are 35% and Christians 3%.

Kumarapandian hailed from a traditional Hindu family. He had five brothers. He was also a member of Hindu Munnani.

When local Muslims wanted to construct a mosque on Viswanathar Temple Street, the government, anticipating trouble and communal problems, refused permission. Ignoring this, however, the Muslims attempted to construct the mosque. Kumarapandian opposed this strongly. Thereafter, he was murdered on 17 December 2006.

Opposing construction of the mosque seems to be a reason for his murder, but there are other reasons also. On the anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid, the Muslims organized a protest demonstration. Although the police had earlier denied permission for the statewide protest demonstrations on 6 December, they later yielded and gave sanction to fundamentalist organisations. Kumarapandian opposed this too.

He also attempted to start an Ambulance Service for the poor, which was not liked by the fundamentalists, as they feared competition to such a service being undertaken by them. “While they hacked him, the jihadis uttered these words openly… You are creating obstacles in the path of mosque construction and you are buying ambulance to compete with us; saying these very words they attacked him with scythes,” Kumarapandian’s brother Ravi Pandian stated.

Another brother, Sakthi Pandian, points out that those behind the gory murder of Kumarapandian have not been identified so far: “Cases have been registered against three persons, namely, Haneefa, Abdullah and Sayed Sulaiman. However, till date, those behind the murders have not been brought to light”.

What is pathetic is the fact that the murder case has not come for trial in court. Advocate Socrates says, “The case has not come even for the argument stage. Since those involved in the murder of Kumarapandian are also involved in the Bengaluru bomb blast case and are absconding, this case has so far not come to the court for arguments”.

One of the suspects, Abdullah, is a recent convert. Another suspect was only 18 years old when he committed the barbaric act. This is a classic example of the poison of terrorism being planted in the minds of youth and children. Advocate Socrates says, “One of the criminals, who was an accused in this murder, is Murugesan alias Abdullah; he had converted to Islam recently and had committed this murder”.

In the meantime, the police sent the 18 year old boy to a Juvenile Home under the Child Welfare Board and the other two were taken in judicial custody. Abdullah and Haneefa petitioned the High Court against Polygraph Test, Brain Mapping Test and Narco Analysis Test, arguing that such tests are violative of Article 21 of the Indian Constitution and it would amount to testimonial compulsion. But the High Court ordered in favour of the police and dismissed the petition of the accused. Yet, since then, the case has not moved even an inch.

Meanwhile, tragedy again struck the family of Kumarapandian. His elder brother Sekar and younger brothers, Suresh and Senthil, who continued the agitation against construction of the mosque from where Kumarapandian left it, were also brutally murdered in the busy thoroughfares of Tenkasi. Showing the forlorn mother of the Pandian brothers, the documentary asks, “What is the panacea for the pain and sufferings of this mother, who lost her four sons?”

Sekar’s daughter was studying well and wanted to become a Chartered Accountant. The documentary asks, “What is the future of this girl who dreams to be a Chartered Accountant?”

Feeling the absence of her father and his motivation, the girl says with firm resolve, “I like to study for CA and I have told about this to my father too. My father used to encourage me a lot, but now there is none to do so. However, I shall strive hard”. Her mother, Sekar’s wife, says, “I somehow borrow money and educate my children”.

When Kumarapandian was murdered, his wife was in an advanced stage of pregnancy. Having lost her four sons and seeing her daughters-in-law and grandchildren suffering, Kumarapandian’s mother says, “We were happy and lived in peace. All these were brought to an abrupt end by them. What can we do? I just draw solace looking at the faces of those surviving”.

Four brothers have sacrificed their precious lives for a public cause. The terrorists who have murdered them have not been punished so far; the case has not come up for trial.

Meanwhile, the fundamentalists persist in their attempt to construct the mosque. Construction materials can reportedly be seen at the site and work is allegedly going on. No tangible action has been taken so far by the authorities.

Sadly people who write about sri lanka have no clue as to how the british ruled during colonialism. The so called buddhist chauvinism was a result of 200 years of suppression. The sinhala buddhists were deprived of an english education and was only entitled to go to vernacular schools which only taught sinhalese unto the 7th standard. Hence when they got political independence the majority of the sinhalese were only educated in sinhalese. 80% of the public servants in Sri Lanka were the tamil christians so were the people who carried out the public services even in Malaysia and Singapore. Any aspirant to public service after independence upto '56 needed english. Thus came about the sinhala only act which was intended to allowe the sinhalese to partake in their newly found independence. This has nothing to do with buddhist chauvinism but an effort to correct an injustice they suffered for 200 years . To make matters worst their land was taken over by the British govt by the waste lands act and sold to christians for small amounts. I wish people who decide to write articles of this nature does a proper investigation into history. Sinhalese buddhist chauvinism is not the cause of majority of the problems in sri lanka but it is vested interests and manupilation by the christians of the propaganda.

Th commentator Jan is incorrect! 80% of the public servants in colonial era Ceylon were not Tamil Christians - they were largely Sinhalese Christians! The Buddhists were not deprived of an English education. Many took to it as ducks took to water and became Christian in the process. Further, the deracination of the Buddhists started long before English rule. It commenced with the Portuguese colonial era when Buddhists took Portuguese last names such as Mendis, Fonseka, Peiris, de Silva, de Soysa, Tissera, Livera, Alwis, Perera, Fernando, de Mel, Salgado, Antonis, Cruz, Rosario etc. Buddhists adopted Portuguese last names. They later adopted English first names - like Mackie Ratwatte, Richard Premadasa, Dudley Senanayake etc.

Buddhists should stop blaming the Tamils for the eclipse of their religion. They should blame their own infatuation with Christian culture!

I will provide three examples.

First, lets look at the main Sinhalese opposition United National Party (UNP) today. Its led by Ranil Wickremasinghe who was baptized as an Anglican Christian although his baptismal records at St Thomas' church in Mt Lavinia have now conveniently gone missing! He was the nephew of the Bishop of the Church of Ceylon - Lakshman Wickremasinghe. The UNP's deputy leader is Sajith Premadasa - son of the erstwhile President of Sri Lanka. Sajith is now Christian as is his wife, mother, sister and brother-in-law!

The second example pertains to the Bandaranaike family - the ones who ushered in political Buddhism in Sri Lanka. As I mentioned in my comment yesterday, SWRD Bandaranaike was born a Christian and likely buried as one! His daughter - who became President herself was married to a Roman Catholic. His other daughter has been in a long term relationship with an Anglican!

The third example pertains to the assassins of Bandaranaike in 1959. The Buddhist monk who pulled the trigger and killed the Prime Minister died a Christian! He had converted. Meanwhile, the Minister of Education in Bandaranaike's Government - Wimala Wijewardene, scion of the Anagarika Dharmapala, the Buddhist revivalist and alleged paramour of the Chief Priest of the Kelaniya Buddhist Temple who masterminded the assassination - also converted to Christianity and joined the Back to the Bible movement in Sri Lanka in the early 1960s! Felix Dias Bandaranaike - nephew of the Prime Minister later became the right hand man of Sirima Bandaranaike. Everyone knows that Felix was a pillar of the church!

The Tamils are not the cause of the deracination of the Sinhalese. The Buddhists are themselves to blame. Sri Lanka is set to welcome Pope Francis early next year - the first Asian country to have invited the new Pope to visit the continent! Now what does that tell you about the alleged Buddhism of the Sinhalese people!! Its skin deep!!!

There are more Sinhalese Christians in Sri Lanka than there are Tamil Christians. As per the 2012 census, Sri Lanka had 986,000 Sinhalese Christians. It had 504,000 Tamil Christians.

So the bottomline is - the middle eastern cult of christianity is to blame for political turmoil accompanied by it's signature of mass killings as witnessed in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and just about every continent in the world. When will people wake up ?

Karikalan,
What bull shit. 74% of sri lankans are buddhists. It was the discrimination and pauperisation of the sinhala buddhists with great help of the Tamils by the Bristish that made them look to the more prosperous sinhalese for governance even though they had a christian back ground. Pl do not manipulate history and statistics and this is not a site for your propaganda. For your information who are the leaders of the christians Chickera , Canagasabai etc Are they Sinhalese. Probably they are in your biased view point.

Karikalan This below is direct interference by the church.

For Rwandans, the pope's apology must be unbearable
If sexual abuse in Ireland warrants his contrition, what contempt is shown by the Vatican's silence over its role in genocide.

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/belief/2010/mar/29/pope-catholics-rwanda-genocide-church

In the sub continent the church does it by inculturation, in a very sly way unlike in Rwanda. The church for instance has shown Ganesh idol in Mother Marys hand.somewhere in India

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-09-19/surat/33951533_1_idol-lord-ganesh-organisers

then to replacing

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-23200860

The church has done many tactics like this in cultruration to Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. The list is endless.

A Rwanda type situation happened in Kandhamal Orissa . Please read the book by Brannon Parker . Please download this ebook and read.

Well said, Karikalan. The truth hurts Jan who is obviously a Buddhist propagandist linked to extreme Sinhalas. All Sri Lanka's Prime Ministers and Presidents were Sinhala, either baptized or married Christians. Facts are stubborn! Btw, Buddhists according to Tamizhchelvam's latest article are only 70% of Sri Lanka.

I learnt a lot by reading Tamizhchelvam's detailed editorial and Karikalan's erudite comment. I did not realize that the Sri Lankan Buddhists are actually very Christian until today. Wow, this is like South Korea and Singapore. Karikalan you need to write more about the hollowness of Buddhism in your country. Few of us, if any, know about what you have so detailed.

It's not clear to me if the entire LTTE were christian converts like it's leaders, but yes, the cult of christianity will play both sides solely so it can gain power. The power of a small country means a lot, and just look what the cult of christianity achieved by bringing about the fall of Rome. It ruled and killed across Europe, before spreading it's tentacles to other continents. The Inquisition reached as far as Japan, until the Samurais decided that the christian missionaries are scum, and killed them to the last man. Till date, the worst insult in Japanese is being called a christian.

And yet Japan had a Christian PM Taro Aso. He was defeated within a year of his becoming PM but is currently the most powerful politician in the cabinet of Prime MInister Shinzo Abe.

Dr. Rajan - I was not aware of that. But I'm really not surprised, as running cults can lead to owning countries and that means big, big money. Look at the tribal convert Vadera from a family of scrap dealers, now he owns billions of dollars.
