Pakistani leadership must focus on own country

It is said that if a person has something at the back of his mind he tends to blurt it out unwittingly in the course of a conversation. Something of the sort happened with Pakistan foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi. It seems that deep down he is convinced that Pakistan is unjustified in demanding revocation of India’s decision to abrogate Article 370, and knows that the abrogation cannot be negated.

In the course of an interview to a Pakistani Television channel, Samaa TV, he has blurted out, “Dilution of Article 370 is India’s internal matter”. Realising the blunder, he immediately went into damage control mode and said the people of Kashmir have already expressed their disappointment on a promise having been broken and have voiced their frustration. He added that the matter is now sub-judice in the Supreme Court of India and that a strong lobby in India feels that by removing Article 370, the nation has “Lost more and gained less.” A cursory look at the interview indicates that Qureshi was flustered and was babbling to cover up the faux pas.

As expected, the opposition started baying for his blood. “How is the FM calling Article 370 of Indian Constitution an internal matter of India? Pakistan does not recognise it, but nothing to do with Kashmir is an internal matter of India. Modi’s attempt at annexing illegally occupied J&K is unacceptable to Pakistan. It is a disputed territory as per UN Resolutions,” PPP’s parliamentary leader in the Senate, Sherry Rehman, said in a series of tweets. Three other tweets on the subject were equally uncharitable to the beleaguered foreign minister.

“Is this not a historical U-turn? FM Shah Mahmood says Pakistan has no issue with India’s decision to do away with article 370. Shah Mahmood says this is India’s internal matter. This means Pakistan has agreed to give up its historical stance that Kashmir is a disputed territory”, tweeted PML-N leader Muhammad Zubair in a sharp indictment of the foreign minister.

Foot-in-the-mouth is a common affliction of Shah Mahmood Qureshi especially so far as India is concerned, because he constantly attempts to hide his fundamentalist roots and deep hatred for India behind diplomatic jargon. On many occasions the smokescreen fades and he ends up saying things that cause embarrassment to his country. He then goes for a classic U-turn, as in this case. Two days after the interview he tweeted, “Let me be clear: Jammu & Kashmir is an internationally recognised dispute on the @UN Security Council agenda. Final settlement of the dispute lies in #UNSC resolution calling for free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices.”  Nobody, however, is ready to buy his overhauled argument.

While this drama was being played out domestically, Imran Khan was facing a different kind of heat during his visit to Saudi Arabia. Riyadh, a long-time ally of Pakistan, has shown a fair degree of disenchantment in recent times, especially in the wake of a sharply worded statement issued by Shah Mahmood Qureshi in August 2020 asking for a high-level meeting on Kashmir at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The statement embarrassed Saudi Arabia vis-à-vis its traditionally good relations with India. Riyadh reacted by recalling $1bn of a $3bn loan given to cash-strapped Pakistan and an expired multi-billion-dollar oil credit facility to Islamabad was not renewed.

Khan’s visit was primarily focussed on making amends and rebuilding the credit line with the cash rich Kingdom. He desperately needs money to keep the bankrupt exchequer of his country afloat now that China has also refused to extend any more loans.

The Saudi leadership, however, was more interested in finding out how the talks process between Pakistan and India, in which it is serving as a facilitator along with the UAE, is progressing. It mentioned the need for Pakistan’s reconciliation with India a number of times in the joint statement and, “emphasised the importance of dialogue between Pakistan and India to resolve the outstanding issues between the two countries, especially the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, to ensure peace and stability in the region.”

Saudi Arabia gave some titbits to Pakistan to keep it afloat, but is unwilling to reduce pressure so far as talks with India are concerned. Within days of the meeting, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal, said that Saudi Arabia will work to encourage reduction in tension between Pakistan and India.

The situation has become politically untenable for Imran Khan with the domestic fundamentalists who nurture him. Following the statement by the Saudi foreign minister, he said, on May 11, that, “unless India reverts its August 5, 2019 action, Pakistan will not hold talks.” To boost the sagging morale and credibility of his foreign minister, Imran Khan lauded the role of the foreign office in leading a full-fledged campaign to highlight the Kashmir issue globally.

Thus, the Indo-Pakistan standoff continues despite the pressure on Pakistan from the international community, including leading players in the Islamic world. Imran Khan keeps wavering from one position to the other in his desire to placate everybody - the Army, the fundamentalists in his country, his donors and the international community. He does not realise that he cannot hoodwink everybody with his anti-India bluster.

Reconciliation with India is imperative for Pakistan. Imran Khan knows it and his closest aides like Qureshi also know it. It would be best for him to accept that Kashmir is an integral part of India and whatever actions the Government of India takes is an internal issue (as his foreign minister unwittingly stated). He can then concentrate on the more important issue of resurrecting the economy of his beleaguered nation.

Do write on the current Covid19 scenario and it’s political ramifications. We need your insights. I think Modi didn’t come out in flying colors given his unpreparedness and subsequent impotence although things are finally improving.

@ Anon,

That is the narrative the Opposition is pedalling. Facts are quite different :
1. As early as last year Modi had warned the states of a possible second wave, and to prepare for it in terms of the infrastructure.
2. At that time the States wanted to be free to purchase their own vaccine on the free market, The Centre said okay.
3. Now, they are clamouring for the Centre to provide the vaccine.

4. Regarding oxygen supplies, these were given to the states by the Centre, but the distribution was not carried out.

Yes, there is a recovery taking place, and the attempt now is to give every citizen the first shot.

Farmers and the poor are given free shots.

In my opinion, the farmers of Punjab continuing their protest is an outrage. In is not clear why the Chief Minister continues to encourage it, endangering his own population.

Politically, although the Opposition would like to believe that all this would dent Modi's image, it may again be wishful thinking.

And the Tina factor is still very much there (if not Modi, a bunch of clowns !).

Dr.

Thanks.

If what you say is correct which is possible, then the Modi administration is woefully lacking in a communications and media strategy to get this picture across.

@ Anon,

[1] Center can work only as a facilitator for any health care related issue or even health care related emergencies such as this.Things take place in the states and UTs.Because of the unprecedented nature of this crisis , Modi and his cabinet have involved themselves fully without bothering about image etc.How many times in the past a PM has interacted with CMs on the same issue for so many times? Last time he did it with the DMs of most affected districts/states. Which PM will do it with a DM? Mamata and others have realised NOW that Modi may start deriving political mileage out of this. But it may be too late for them.

2. Rich farmers from Punjab,Haryana etc find themselves in real bind.Remember those old ladies of Shaheen Baug agitating against CAA?Where are they?! Since so many months these farmers have been ploughing lonely furrows. [ literally! ] let them. Modi govt has responded by directly crediting MSP amount to farmers' bank accounts.[ This has been vehemently objected to by capt Amrinder Singh and his commission agents].Crores of farmers across the country too are getting cash deposited in their accounts.

3. Consider the Muslims who have started voting for AIIMM of Owaisi where AIIMM has chance of winning the election.Do they vote because of Owaisi has promised them good governance or some freebees? Do they vote for AIIMM because of good communication strategy of Owaisi and his party? More than 75 crore Hindu voters have to start voting for a Hindu party for their survival.[Witness the post poll violence against Hindus in WB]. Anti Hindu forces are trying to break up Hindu unity. We should come out of this template of good governace, honest government, jobs, economic growth, education , health care etc while voting.Any party that comes to power will have to do all these. But an anti Hindu party coming to power at this juncture will be a disaster. Consider N-E and the way it has been taken over by evangelists and Islamists under a benign anti Hindu rule.or consider the fate of Kashmiri Hindus or consider the Communal violence bill drafted by NAC.List can go on.... Hindus need not become fanatical Hindus.Enough if they can become smart voters.

Agreed. The key is 'smart' voting. Hindus have to realise that.

What you mention is food for thought But it still validates my position that half the battle is about communication and information. A media strategy is imperative. Politics is about marketing. Its a sales job.

And I do think that Good Governance, development, health care, education, economic growth and jobs are crucial. One can add Hinduism to this equation. The center retains a responsibility even if many of these are state subjects. If the states fail, it is all the more important for the center to step in.

There has been a concerted, vicious and targeted media campaign within and outside India. The Modi administration lacked a media strategy to address this.

It also failed to grab the initiative early enough in the second wave.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

@ Dr.Vijaya Rajiva,

Thanks for "agreeing " with my idea about "Smart voting"

@ Anon,

Thank you for your response. Agree about a leader's ability to communicate. You are right about our collective failure to anticipate the ferocity of 2nd wave.[ We also did not anticipate the speed with which it is receding!].Our failure to save so many lives is collective. It is unfair to blame only Modi for this.

This govt has done much more to improve our health care sector than all the previous governments.Pl consider following.

1. Number of AIIMS have gone from 6 to 22
2.Number of medical colleges from 381 to 565
3.Number of undergraduate medical seats from 54358 to 85726
4.Number of post graduate seats from 30191 to 54275
5.Number of Covid testing lab from 1 to 2500 [ in one year!]
6. Capacity for producing medical oxygen from 700MT to 9000MT [ in one month!]

Above facts have been "communicated" to the people by this govt.Reason why many of us are aware of them.

As good Hindus we should rely on the facts given by the govt that has been installed by good [!] Hindus. Why should we allow ourselves to be influenced by two penny hacks? [ Consider the way Ms Burkha Dutt trivialized the sad demise of her father].

You are right about majority of us being concerned with good and honest governance as well as delivery of public services. As our economy expands and we get budgets , things are bound to improve further under ANY dispensation. In any case Modi govt has performed much better on this in past 7 years.

I am sure you agree that present generation of Hindus have a job on hand.Installing and perpetuating pro Hindu govts at the center and in all states.

Thankyou Jitendraji for the numerous concrete facts. @ Anon. I agree about the vicious propaganda.

There is a very good article by Virendra Parikh 'West Bengal's Self Goal: Forebordings for the Future' (Bharata Bharati, May 22, 2021).
Its central point is that Hindus have to do smart voting so that the only Hindu party in India will continue to ensure that Sanatana Dharma will endure.

Some other good points as well. Apparently, the BJP IT cell has put out this info :

Hindus in the diaspora, and Bengali Hindus also, have started protests abroad. Placards : Stop the Hindu genocide, Hindu lives matter, etc.
