Can Punjabi Muslims ever show decency? Lahore arrests Pashtun, Baloch, Seraiki students

Take out Western or Muslim Punjab from the map of South Asia and the region will be one of the most peaceful regions on earth? No jihad in Afghanistan and Kashmir, no crimes against humanity in France-sized Balochistan. It is all a sad story. As many as 170 Pashtun, Baloch and Seraiki students of Punjab University, Forman Christian College, Government College and Punjab College in Lahore, capital of Punjab, have been lodged in Kot Lakhpat Jail where many of them have been badly tortured, according to Quetta Online.

The online service on Facebook said 10 students have been sent on physical remands to unknown police stations, while five students were severely injured in Iqbal Town and are in dire need of medical aid.

Punjabi media personalities, including one of the most bigoted, Orya Maqbool Jan, have been blaming Pashtun, Baloch and Seraiki students instead of the goons of the Islami Jamiat-i-Tulaba, student wing of Pakistan’s Muslim Brotherhood, called the Jama’at-i-Islami. “I have requested and urged three federal ministers, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and the Punjab government, but they are deaf and dumb to resolve the university issue,” Dr Senator Jehanzeb Jamaldini of the Balochistan National Party said, adding. “Punjab government and federal ministers are also siding with the IJT and showing least interest to resolve the bloody issue.”

“The aggressive and violent treatment meted out to Baloch and Pashtun students by the Punjab police and administration deserves condemnation. The government’s silence and keeping the arrested students hungry in lock ups does not reflect civilized thinking. Inter-provincial relations are already strained and bitter. Such actions will further widen the gulf,” said another BNP leader, former senator Sanaullah Baloch.

It is Muslim generals of Punjab who are behind the non-stop daily acts of terrorism in Afghanistan, the stone-pelters in (Indian) Kashmir and they are the ones who are responsible for conducting unconscionable acts of crimes against humanity against the people of Balochistan since 2005 - for the fourth time since March 1948.

Punjabi generals’ crimes in Balochistan include killing 35,000 Baloch through firing and aerial bombardments, throwing live men from choppers to create terror in Baloch villages, tying the dead behind trucks and dragging the bodies in villages, enforced disappearances of 21,000 Baloch patriots and burying of 6,000 of them in mass graves, burning of homes and villages, and ridiculing and beating crying women and children. Scores of women and Baloch kids are feared to be languishing in dungeons and being used as sex slaves by Pakistani soldiers. More than two dozen items of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have been violated.

In 1971, these Punjabi Muslims committed crimes against humanity in Bangladesh as well, committing genocide of three million Bengalis and raping 200,000 Bengali women, who gave birth to 30,000 Babies of War.

On the situation of the students in Lahore, Quetta Online said, “The actual situation is far more alarming and disturbing than we had imagined”; the Punjab Police has filed eight FIRs (First Information reports) against students on charges of terrorism, vandalism and dacoity. Four of these FIRs have invoked anti-terrorism laws. Around 15 students were named in FIRs by name, whereas more than 100 students were declared as “unknown.”

Once the FIRs were filed, the police started arresting every Baloch and Pashtun student that they could lay their hands on. Eighteen students have been sent on a seven-day physical remand. Some of those sent on physical remand were critically injured by the Islami Jamiat Tulaba goons, not provided proper medical treatment and are reportedly being subjected to further torture.

“Those students who are on a judicial remand haven’t been provided any food. Friends and families of arrested students are not allowed to meet them. Food brought by friends of arrested students isn’t allowed either. As if this isn’t enough, the police are using various tactics to delay presenting these students before court so as to undermine chances of a bail. This is an extremely disturbing situation,” said Quetta Online.

The students on a seven-day physical remand are Abdullah Wazir, Asfandyar Khan, Ashraf Khan, Mohammed Shafa, Amir Khan, Alamgir Wazir, Jahangir Khan. Students who were critically injured and need medical attention and are presently being held in Iqbal town police station are Nasir Wazir, Qaiser Khan, Qasim Bugti, Hameed Ullah, Iqbal Khan and Mirwais Khan. Among those arrested are Bilal Khan Kakar, a humanist philosopher who had visited the USA on an exchange program.

But is unlikely the Punjab leaders will ever listen to sane counsel. If you look at history, you will be shocked at how Punjabis Muslims treated their own Hindu and Sikh brothers and sisters in historic Hindu and Sikh cities like Lahore and Rawalpindi. Even today these Punjabis treat their own Ahmadis, Christians and even Shias as if they were lepers.

When one of the most liberal governors in Punjab history, Salman Taseer, stood up to defend a voiceless Christian woman, Aasia Bibi, he was gunned down by a freak, Malik Mumtaz Qadri. Let alone the unlettered Punjabi masses, the criminal was treated like a folk hero by the educated lawyers’ community, garlanded and kissed. Tens of thousands showed up at his funeral, treating him like a martyr, while Asif Ali Zardari, who was president of Pakistan at the time, did not show up for the funeral of the slain governor, his party member, out of fear of Punjabi Islamists who have an unholy alliance with the army generals. Aasia Bibi, meanwhile, continues to languish behind bars.

It is true Punjab produced poets like Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Habib Jalib, but unfortunately those guys existed on the fringe of Punjab society. The mainstream Punjab thinking is represented by the most bigoted lal topi wala (red-capped) Zaid Hamid, and the generals at the army GHQ and ISI headquarters in Aabpara, Islamabad.

In contrast to Punjabi Muslims, Punjabi Sikhs and Punjabi Hindus are some of the most magnanimous and kind hearted folks.
